So why did the gas companies raise their prices? Because...........they didn't want people to buy so much gas that a gas shortage would happen. But out of fear of being called a price gouger they kept the prices low. As a result many stations ran out of gas and guess what......the same people who complained about gouging then had no gas to buy! The politicians used the emotions of people around the country in order to push their agenda; it resulted in worsening an already bad situation.

I couldn't have made it easier!!

This video is good economics 101. A locksmith is likely to charge you a lot of money for his services. If he charges too much however you will sooner break your car window than pay him a ridiculous amount of money. Breaking your window would be a substitute for the locksmith's services. Substitutes are made when the cost of something is too high. In past generations there wasn't as much emphasis on protecting the children. Why is it that today's children are seen as valuable and past generations of children weren't seen the same way? Supply and demand! Actually that isn't a joke. In past years families in America were often large in numbers of children. Since the age of the birth control pill children are fewer among families. And what does the law of supply and demand say happens when supply decreases?

Well to people who enjoy the resource of children, (parents) the scarce supply (of children) leads to an increase in value. Here is one thing that such complainers don't consider... If a rich CEO or athlete fails to receive a lot of money,
it doesn't follow that you will get the money instead. The person complaining about Bill Gates making lots of money isn't likely to make a dime more even if the government were to put a limit on the amount of money that Bill Gates could make. Easy lessons like this make Capitalism fun to learn.

The anti-Capitalists lack the wisdom of Homer Simpson,

Maybe even simple minded Homer Simpson understands simple Capitalism. I watched some of it live on C-Span and I found some remarks by Cornel West to be interesting. He said that America was a "corporation" before it was a country. What I found interesting was the hatred that Mr. West (and the audience that applauded the remark) seemed to have for corporations. He probably didn't consider how corporations have created things like television and microphones so people like himself could broadcast a message that he considered to be important. He said that that a lot of investors fail to understand the logic of buying and selling. A lot of investors want to get out of the market when prices of stocks drop and they wish to get into the stock market once prices go up. As Tom correctly pointed out it should be the exact opposite; people should act the same way towards prices on Wall Street as they do towards prices at Macy's. In other words buy when the price is low, don't panic. Common sense helps a lot in Capitalist countries.

Why?

Ok this is an easy one. They also blame Capitalism for their misery. But thanks to Capitalism poverty is under the control of the individual. The real problem that such leftists make is they fail to realize that poverty is overcome by optimism. For instance, a lot of low income people fail to buy stocks because they don't think they are able to. A lot of low income people don't use resources like libraries, churches, and family because they don't think it will do them any good. With that kind of pessimism poor people will stay poor.
Capitalism honors optimism.

The main ingredient,

Capitalism does have its opponents. The opponents often ask why Capitalism is superior to other systems like socialism and communism. The thing that makes Capitalism superior to other forms of government is freedom. But I am betting that conservatives understand poverty much better than liberals. Ask yourself this: Who is more likely to agree that America is the greatest country the world has ever known, liberals or conservatives? Of course conservatives would be the answer to that question; conservatives know the greatness in America because they understand how poverty looks in other nations. Liberals on the other hand think being poor in America is equivalent to the harsh reality that starving children have to endure in Africa. So now who do you think truly understands poverty more, liberals or conservatives?

Reaganomics works every time,

A lot of Reagan-haters insist on labeling anything pro-Capitalist as "trickle down" economics. (or Reaganomics) As if Reagan's idea of pro-Capitalism economics was wrong. Here it is: Those businesses that are shut down by Wal-Mart deserve to fail. For two main reasons (1) Those businesses have failed in offering goods and services that most people consider to be valuable. (2) Success is cheapened if we do not allow failure to happen when it is deserved. It is damned difficult for a mom and pop shop to compete with Wal-Mart. But until the mom and pop shops stand up to Wal-Mart and compete they shall never experience the joy of a David versus Goliath type victory. Great success only happens when failure is faced and accepted. When failure is not faced, success is weakened and loses its great value.

Longing for Reaganomics,

Ronald Reagan understood the beauty of Capitalism. It is easy to see this in action when someone invents a car and sells it. But if you look at it deeper you see that the design of the car had to be thought of, so did the car's color, and so did the design of the car's interior. All people with such ideas can make money under a Capitalist system. If you are not in good physical health to lift heavy equipment on an assembly line, then you could learn to paint and sell portraits. The book was Days of Infamy by Harry Turtledove. In short it is a "what if" fiction story of the Japanese capturing Hawaii shortly after Pearl Harbor. Prison camps (Japanese prison camps) were set up in Hawaii and American soldiers were fed little or nothing to eat and treated very badly. It helped me realize that if liberal ideas prevail and today's terrorists win .......poverty (liberals hate poverty, you know) could be forced upon Americans by our enemy. May all Capitalists take heed and fight to win this war.

A unique Ayn Rand quote:

"Run for your life from any man who tells you that money is evil. Im not sure what his definition of "artificially" would be, but I do lean towards answering "yes" to his question. The focus is not on insurance businesses....but on government. Ask anyone over 70 years of age if they remember "affordable health care". Almost every one will tell you they do. At the time of affordable health care there wasn't pressure on businesses to be responsible for paying the bill of their employees' health care. During the WWII era many companies offered "fringe benefits" such as health care to sway employees to work for them. The reason the businesses did so was because laws were passed preventing the businesses from offering more pay, so the businesses decided to offer health care instead.

Ask someone over 70 years of age if they noticed a difference in health care prices after government and businesses became involved in the health care industry. They'll answer "yes" for sure.

A simple solution,

Health insurance is very expensive. But there is a way to lower the prices almost over night; all that would need to happen is for all employers to drop health insurance coverage for their employees. Why? My opinion is that such ignorance has more to do with a person's view of life than any other factor. Minimum wage supporters say that the law "helps the poor", but it has been proven many times that minimum wage laws raise unemployment among poor people. The people who continue to support minimum wage after the facts have shown how it hurts the poor, do so because of their view of life. These people can't understand why this is so. After all, they're good people aren't they? And they work just as hard as anyone else does! Yet they're not wealthy! It can't be them! It must be the other guy! So, they take comfort in believing that wealthy people must have acquired their wealth through dishonest means. By cheating people, exploiting people, and by using crooked lawyers. The real problem with this, other than the fact that it simply isn't true, is that the person who develops this wealth-hatred is really programming himself or herself to remain in their present economic situation. Racism can't hold anyone back in a Capitalist economy. In the 1960's many black actors faced racism on the entertainment market. Black actor Duane Jones famous for his lead role in "The Night of the Living Dead" beat the odds however. Suprisingly his role in the movie was originally going to be given to a white male truck driver. But when Duane Jones auditioned for the role, his work ethic proved to be better than any of the actors George Romero could find for the part. I can tell you one of the many reasons to oppose a strong government is because such a government encourages thuggery. In fact big government is responsible for so many people saying "all politicians are crooked". The liberal politicians (Democrat and Republican) who often talk about helping poor people, steal money from people who have it in order to give it to others who have less. People often accuse companies like Wal-Mart of exploiting workers and making "excessive profit". But the people doing the complaining never stop to think about why Wal-Mart and other major corporations are successful. The easy answer is...hard work; the successful companies work hard at pleasing the customer. Otherwise the company can't become successful, at least not in a Capitalist country like the United States. If you will be creative enough to form ideas to please others, you will become successful no matter how poor you are. Why? Because change is always for the better in the long term. In man's early attempt to fly all sorts of funny looking machines were made that couldn't fly, but those failed inventions helped man learn the right way to build a airplane. Change doesn't have to be scary; in reality it is liberating. Look at the America of the 1950's and compare the technology of that time to today's technology. Bush is thankfully pushing to make tax cuts permanent. He will have no problem getting support from a majority of conservatives. Unfortunately some conservatives don't grasp the basics of economics. Such conservatives are very much against free trade. Pat Buchanan is a good example, he supports tariffs and calls for an end to American trade with countries like China. Buchanan fails to realize that it is misleading to say "America trades with China"; it could be correctly stated by saying "American citizens trade with Chinese citizens". Stopping free trade would restrict individual freedom among citizens. Buchanan also fails to realize that trade restrictions do not have a history of defeating oddball governments in other countries.

Pat Buchanan

Capitalism = miracles,

With the tragic news of the 12 dead coal miners in West Virginia, we have a shred of good news.....there was one survivor. One of those many benefits is respect. Any nation that is a Capitalist nation has respect for private property rights; in turn its citizens respect each other. A good example is a restaurant owner who bans smoking from his restaurant; when he posts a sign that says "No Smoking", smokers respond by going to where they may smoke. So the smoker has freedom to choose to smoke elsewhere and the restaurant owner has the freedom to not allow smoking in his business. Money? People? Institutions? The answer is
none of the above. The thing that fuels Capitalism is ideas. Before Thomas Edison gave us the
light bulb, it was an idea in his mind. In the midst of the Great Depression, people with ideas thrived (Henry Ford). The unfortunate reality is that Socialist thinking minds (with no ideas) want the benefits created by the ideas of Capitalists. This is true despite the contempt that Socialists hold for Capitalists.

Truth is always with us,

People who keep track of the news a lot often don't realize that Capitalism's Truths never leave the news cycle. It's easy to spot whenever the topic has to do with economic matters, but is less obvious when it comes to issues like crime and the war in Iraq. When it comes to the issue of crime, Capitalism explains a lot: when you increase the cost of crime (this is done by punishing criminals) people commit less of it. When you lessen the cost of crime (this is done by lessening criminal punishment) people commit more of it. Keep that in mind during news coverage of the war on terror; do you want terrorists to commit more or fewer acts of terror? If you want fewer you now know how to make that happen.

Along comes Nathan,

"We do not hear the term "compassionate" applied to business executives or entrepreneurs, certainly not when they are engaged in their normal work. Big government programs have been with us for so long that people can't help but to not understand Capitalism. Why should children prepare to take care of their elderly parents when the government will do it for them? Years of big government has many people thinking that the government should provide for the people and elected politicians are glad to see that.

"Vote for me, and get more welfare!"

Windfall profits,

While reading George Will's latest column, I learned a good definition of "windfall profit". Their parents taught them that living is a joy, but that joy comes with a price. To maintain your freedom you must not take it for granted; you must not trade it for security. Robert Greenwald is a perfect illustration of that saying. He is the liberal filmmaker behind the new Wal-Mart documentary (or propaganda piece) titled: Wal-Mart..The High Cost of Low Price. Despite the anti-capitalist attitude this film provides, the title is somewhat refreshing to hear; especially from a liberal filmmaker. I of course don't agree with Mr. Greenwald's premise that Wal-Mart is evil. But it is about time a liberal understood that cost does not equal price. High gas prices does not necessarily mean the cost of gas is high. The title of Robert Greenwald's film shows that liberals agree with free markets more than they realize. I suggest you email him at, robert@robertgreenwald.org and tell him to read my post.

Robert Greenwald

Another truth about taxes,

Earlier today on The Rush Limbaugh Program, Walter Williams explained something about taxes. He said that no matter what kind of tax system a country has, the most important thing is federal spending. Dr. Williams is exactly right because no matter how fair a tax system becomes, it doesn't help if the politicians unfairly waste taxpayer money on junk. A good example is in West Virginia where the government has built a parking garage named after Senator Robert Byrd. Yes, taxpayers have to pay for that garage.

Don't quash freedom,

Recent talk at the United Nations concerns the future of the internet. Such words as "greedy" and "immoral" are used to describe companies that earn high profits. What is often overlooked is why profits are sometimes high. When a company's profits are high, that is a signal that somewhere in the economy consumers are being underserved. As a result competitors enter the market and consumers find their needs being met. Without a company earning high profits, there would be no incentive for competitors to enter the market and consumers would not have their needs met. That is so far off base it is really not worth mentioning, but I thought it would help me make a point. In order to progress our standard of living the free market throws away anything that doesn't satisfy the consumers. (the consumers are me and you) It does so through competition. If any business isn't fit to compete in the free market, then it isn't fit to advance our standard of living. In that light, it is difficult to see why any thriving business is hated by people who benefit from it.

Inexpensive yet costly,

Even if you can purchase something at a cheap price, you still may pay a huge cost for it. A good example would be illegal labor from Mexico. Some Americans see it as a good thing to have Mexicans work for cheap wages to build houses. They reason that since the Mexicans work for small wages, the houses will cost less. As far as price goes that may be true. But cost includes more than prices; in this case it includes longer waiting lines in doctors offices, higher taxes to supply health care to illegals, and any crime that illegals may bring here with them.
